HUNGARY

My first comments on this disappeared into the cyber-ether. Everyone's dressing in black for this with the stage in a suble red. This starts with four of the dancers in the starting blocks popsition, with the camera the focusing on the lead dancers feet. There were lots of technical problems on the early takes but the final recorded version was better.  The dancing is a mixture of Riverdance, Busby Berkley, Wild Dances, with some martial arts at times and ends up looking like 5 drunken sailors after somebody has dropped an ecstasy tablet in their rum. What lets this down is the vocals. The singer looks nervous and lost at times and there were some missed and flat notes, although she dances well. Whether the singing will even be noticed with so much going on on stage is hard to say. I think that of Norway, Romania and this, Hungary has the best chance of qualifying, but I wouldn't be booking my tickets to Budapest (unless thee are connecting flights to Minksk!). Chances of qualifying : 80%

ROMANIA

I just made it in time to see Romania. There was a lot of technical set-up here, as they have to get a lot of oil drums, a full drum kit and lots of tricky close-up camera work sorted out. Just like Norway before it, this is lacking badly from the ban on fireworks on stage (for safety reasons). Luminita wears a tight white t-shirt and jeans, while Sistem are lost in dry ice for most of the first minute. Once the drum break comes it, they give it everything, and then Luminita gives the the drumming a go as well, and it looks completly silly and contrived. There's a few lifeless sparks coming from an angle grinder at one stage, but real spark is the one thing that this lacks. I liked this before (certianly in the preview), but sad to report this is a flat shambles of a performance. It's too busy and Luminita shows no charisma to the camera whatsoever. (Someone also needs to gibe her advice on how to apply lipstick). People are wondering which song is going to go down the toilet like Latvia did in 2003 and Belgium did last year, and my money is on this! I thought that this was a pretty certain qualifier, now I'd rate it's chances at around 35%. This is turning into a VERY open semi-final.

good morning from a sunny Sunday in Kiev.

Another night of fun in Kiev last night.
I was appointed the days social secretary apparently and rounded up loads of us pressguys and fans
to meet at Euroclub for food before heading upstairs for dancing.
We had 7 at our table and there was another dozen or more dotted about so lots of discussion ensued.
A nice mix or UK, Irish, German, Swiss, Turkish and Israeli is what this is all about.
Euroclub later was very very busy but maily with monied Ukrainians.
No Euro music tonight for the same reason. France's Ortal and Israels Shiri were spotted dancing
wildly on the dance floor for quite some time.
Ortal sure knows how to party. Go girl GO.

First rehearsals this morning

Romania was again very good, wonderful gimmick with the mass of drums. They have lost the flames
but gained the Sparks, so a fair compromise.
This was not quite as good as rehearsal day 1 but still definite qualifier for me.

Hungary were all in black and looked a bit like a part of the stage crew. I dont think this is
their final costume though. Great performance, great dancing , slighty ropey vocals but this is
hitting all the right buttons for me. This is the broadest scope for picking up votes
throughout Europe.A sure fire qualifier and still got WINNER written all over it.

Finland has faboulous vocals both backing and main. Good stage presence and wonderfully put together.
Wasnt a pre contest favourite for me but now i fell it could sneak into the Final.

Macedonia is still a bit messy and weak for me. Sorry guys cos i know a few love it.

Ok more later .

Hi again.

Keith and Andrew have already sent in their views of this morning's first set of rehearsals so here are mine.

Romania

Sistem are completely covered in smoke at the start of the song and the band members seem to be have red lasers which looks good in the smoke. Then we cut to Luminita. No pyrotechnics but we have sparks this time. This must be the 'compromise' solution.

This was much improved on the first rehearsal for me. It still looks TOO busy on stage and on camera for my liking and coming after Norway, it may not have the impact that many expect it should.

Hungary

MUCH improved on the first rehearsal. Song starts off with a close up of the main daners feet then takes in all of the dancers on stage. The lighting was much improved and the camera work was also very slick. Vocals slightly ropey in a few places but not in many. This looks like a pretty certain qualifier for me.

Finland

Pretty much the same stage for this one as in the first rehearsal except for a few more flying doves in the cylinders. Lots of walking still done by the backing singers. Don't discount this as a potential finalist. It's the first ballad after Norway, Romania and Hungary and it is a string vocal performance so it is possible that we will seee Finland on May 21st IMHO.

Macedonia (FYR)

Similar performance to first rehearsal. Pretty lacklustre for me to be honest. For me, Martin comes second in the 'Eurovision 2005 I cannot dance competition' beaten only by Joseph McCaul. Very mute reaction in the hall to this one. Will have to perform a miracle to DESERVE to qualify for the final but never say never in eurovision.

FINLAND
On a straw poll in the restaurant the other night, I was the only person who said it was going to be a finalist. I think that if we had the same poll today I would not be alone. Geir gives a fabulous vocal effect, and while the walking around the stage might be a distraction in the auditorium, it works very well on camera. The Finns are yet to wear their stage clothes and I just hope for nothing too distracting.
This has an excellent build, and I would be very disappointed if it did not qualify, and after that, with a good draw, who knows. Chances of qualifying : 65%

FYR MACEDONIA
I'm afraid that the only contest Martin is likely to win is a pie eating one. He's a chubby lad and dressed in jeans and a track suit top, it really shows. The singing is ordinary at best, he has the dancing ability of a three legged giraffe and he runs around aimlessly which three nubile young things do grade one aerobic exercises. The "gimmick" for this is that Martin runs to side stage and plays the drums but the bagpipes kick in. The staging is annonymous, the performance poor. Chances of qualification : 6%

ANDORRA
We're hitting a really bad patch now. Marian is surrounded by two fit young men, who have plucked an ostrich on the way to the show and use the plumage to "enhance" an overly complicated and distracting dance routine. Marian herself looks fine in white (despite what you might read elsewhere) and things go reasoonably well, bit the floral stage setting looking very good, but towards the end things go badly wrong. Marian has problems getting to the low register and one of the backing singers (Anabel Conde from Eurovision 1995) ends up in a screaming match which is really awful. The arrangement is the second one (as on the compilation CD). I'm afraid that once again its 12 points from Catalonia and nothing from everyone else. Chances of qualifying : 10%

SWITZERLAND
Just when I thought everything bar Finland would be a let down today this one really came through the pack. Thy've overcome the problem of having vocals on the backing track by adding extra harmonies and while they aren't great in the hall, they work better on the screen feed. Vanilla Ninja are dressed in white, and 90% of the focus is on the lead singer. The rest of the girls do the rock chic posing and a bit of running around. The stage looks amazing for this. It really comes alive with flashing lights in time to the tune. Another pretty certain qualifier based on this. Chances of qualifying : 95%

CROATIA
This looks great in the auditorium, but doesn't quite work so well on screen. The Lad member (three girls) are dressed like like lingerie models from the waist up and brides from the waist down. Very disconcerting unless you have a marriage fetish. Boris keeps his eyes closed too much and the handstand by the drummer is a BIG mistake. However vocall this is great. Another song which really sounds powerful. Chances of qualify: 55%

BULGARIA
The lead singer is dressed in pyjamas, but it's he audience that will be nodding off after this. Dreary in every possible way. The stage is in a dull chocolate brown and the band go through the motions (cue a joke I won't use!) in a plodding mechanical way. If this qualifies I'll gobsmacked. Chances of qualification : 3%

Somw quick comments on the last 3 rehearsals

Andorra

Marian now seems to have blonde hair extensions as her hair now falls down all of her back! Harmonies better but not perfect on this one especially near the end of the song. No change in stage setting from first rehearsal

Switzerland

White is the colour here for costumes.Jackets and boots worn today. same stage setting with running tiger in video. Very strong rehearsal. Very good camera work and good vocals with backing c=vocals much improved from first rehearsal.

Croatia

Very revealing outfits for the female Lado members for Croatia. Bare midriifs and almost see through (in places) white skirts.
Another very good rehearsal . However, the mad drummer is still doing his handstand near the end of the song which is completely pointless and , to my mind, will lose it votes. Cannot understand why this part of the performance has not been dropped.

Hello again from a lovely warm Kiev.

They are now organising backstage tours for press. You just need to sign up at the press centre and get a start time.
Some of the lads went round it earlier and reported that you get to see the dressing rooms, viewing room, and backstage area.
A peek in the green room door but not into it as its not all together yet.
Bumping into some of the artists and photo opportunities are an added bonus.

After lunch rehearsals started with Andorra. Better than first rehearsal this is a well sung song, with busy choreography
and lots of waving of fans. The backing vocals are sometimes a bit out for me but otherwise a pleasant song.
12 points from Catalan Spain but not much else I fear.

Switzerland were up next and their costumes were almost all white. I believe the jeans will be replaced by white trousers
on the night. Works very well on stage against a good lighting backdrop. Musically superb, vocally excellent.
A sure fire qualifier for me and I think the first one all of us agree on.

Croatia came up next, the girl backing are in all white frilly wedding cake style dresses. The drummer and bagpiper in
more traditional folk costume and Boris casual. An excellent vocal arrangement and good harmonies make this a possible
qualifier............until just before the end the drummer starts doing a totally unneccessary and pointless distraction
of a handstand. I hope this doesnt lose people interest cos i feel it could. They still have time to omit it and i hope they do.

Bulgaria is still as dull as dishwater on a rainy day in Sofia and Lorrain is definetly having a snooze now.

Finally for now just before Ireland are due on to rehearse, Joe and Donna and some of the Irish delegation popped into
the press Viewing area of the arena to watch Vanilla Ninja perform. They seemed enthusiastic with their applause
and this has probably more to do with the Swiss/Estonian performance rather than the fact Joe was seen cavorting nearby to
the girls at Euroclub the other night.

One last report for today from me.

I will miss the last rehearsal of the day from Poland. Tonight is the start of country parties.
All will take place in Euroclub Arena with Slovenia followed by Romania and then Belarus.
Hopefully peter and/or Keith will cover it though.
If its as good as their first rehearsal then i think they may be impressed. poland is a dark
horse for qualification for me.

Ireland were first on after the afternoon break. I admitted to not liking this song but loving the
performance last time out. Now after today I admit to liking the song as well as the performance.
Joe who had appeared nervous 1st time out is now smiling a lot more and looking like he is enjoying
himself. he still cant dance for toffee but hey things are looking up. Donna is as polished as ever
and the backing singers/dancers work a good routine and provide good backing vocal.
I still think Ireland are going to qualify after seeing this today.

Slovenia up next and Omar seems to have recoverd his voice somewhat from 1st rehearsal.
Fantastic vocal performance from him and his classical backup works really well with the rock
feel of the music. A lovely song, well sung but not convinced it will swing it in Europe.
May be in my middle group of maybe qualifiers.

Denmark is also a very pleasant song, very good vocals and some great backup. Some movement around the
stage during the routine. Again this wasnt a pre contest favourite but it has gone up a bit for me.
But qualification??? I dont know to be honest.

Well thats all for now.
Semi Final rehearsals are now over after today.
The 14 finalists start off tomorrow with javine up first at 9.30am.
so I best not overparty myself tonight should I?!!

IRELAND
On the positive side, it is better than it was on Thursday. We're still not seeing their performance outfits, but the routine now seems to be established. Donna & Joe are only doing the most basic moves while the four girls are doing all the choreography including the Irish dancing. Donna & Joe sound great and look relaxed but the backing dancers are not singers and even the little bit that they are being asked to do sounds off key. The stage looks fine, if a little bland compared to others, but the camerawork is really good. I no longer have this in the bottom 5. There are at least 7 songs with far worse performances in the semi. I don't however see it making the final cut. I have two consolations that might give me comfort. Both Bulgaria (before us) and Slovenia (after us) are going down the toilet faster than last night's chicken curry. The other consolation is that this could well be this year's Malta 2004 ("On Again,Off Again") which I didn't like because it was far too cheesey. I don't like cheesy stuff and I'm hopong that "Love?" falls into the same category; a performance I don't like but that a lot of people vote for.

The On_Europe team (see our "Friends" button above) love it, mind you they've been on the beer all day and people's opinion of how good Ireland is seems to have a direct link to how drunk you are. Needless to say no alcohol has passed my lips since I came to Kyiv ;-)

At least two thirds of the people I have spoken to, think that this is either a certain qualifier or is in with a great chhance. I really hope that they are right and I am wrong.

Chances of qualifying : 25% (my opinion)

SLOVENIA
Omar is STILL having problems with the performance, and the crescendo is a cacophony of noise; Omar singing, there's loud rock guitars and an operatic woman, all at top volume. The ending is sweet (Omar walks over and hugs his female backing vocalist), the staging (in red and blue) is magnificent but this is going nowhere.

DENMARK
Jacob is in a pink paisley shirt and grey suit (as are his four backing singers) and clashing brown shoes (that look completly out of place). Jacob, is really singing his socks off. He now starts on one of the elevated side stages and walks down when the chorus kicks in. The routine involves a lot of walking around and with some nice camera work it really looks well. I like this a lot, but I still have a reservation on it getting through, as it is a tad empty. Chances of qualifying : 30%

POLAND
As lively as a bag of cats, well performed but very one dimensional. The performance is exactly as it was on Friday. It's still a contender, and I would rate its chances at 45%.

There seems to be a general agreement that its MUCH easier to choose 10 non-qualifers than choosing 10 that will make it through, and that there are only two or three certain qualifiers. The dress rehersals on Wednesday and Thursday will tell a tale, but at the moment, none of the following are getting through unless there's a HUGE improvement; Lithuania, Portugal, Latvia, Belgium, Estonia, Macedonia, Andorra, Bulgaria, Slovenia. That leaves 16 in contention for 10 places. And I would rank them as follows;

Virtually certain; Iceland, Switzerland, Belarus

Great chances; Israel, Hungary, Croatia

Better than average chance; Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Poland

Likely to just miss out; Austria, Monaco, Romania

Still (just about) at the races; Moldova, Ireland, Denmark

But it's still all he play for!.
