May. 16th, 2005 @ 02:11 am I don't like Mondays (extended)
First of all apologies for my website being down for a long part of yesterday, but as it's hosted in Northern Ireland, there was nothing I could do to get up. It was nice but a tad disappointing that 5 people came up to me last night to say they couldn't access it! You have NO idea how much effort (and hangover tablets) it took to get me to the press area this morning. As many of my visitors are UK based I decided I should catch every moment of Javine's performance. A change to today's schedule is that Cyprus and France have swapped places in the rehearsal schedule. I have been told unofficially that all the Cypriot stage gear has been held up in customs and there was no chance to get it through by the 13.10 starting time. So France takes that time slot and Cyprus goes on at 19.45, when most people will be getting ready for tonight's official welcome party at the Marinsky Palace.

Last night the party circuit really kicked in. When I say "circuit" I really mean the trek from one floor of the Arena club to the other. Slovenia started on the ground floor with lots of free beer, wine, nibbly bits, tourist DVDs and (for me the highlight) a lovely accoustic set by Omar Naber. After watching his rather uncomfortable stage performance, it was great to see him just sit there with a guitar and sing the song, as well as Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and Robbie Williams' "Sexed Up". I'm not sure if it was the party (and people wishing to be gracious to their hosts), but there is a lot more positivity to the song than I thought. Maybe I have written off its chances too early and given that I loved the song the first time I hearrd it, maybe I've become tired of it, while others hearing it for the first few times are more positive.

I went home to freshen up, and missed the Romanian / Sisten gig in the courtyard. My apartment is 2 minutes walk from the Euroclub in the Arena I got back in time for the first ugly scrum to get into the Belarus party. Everybody had to go through a heavy security check and F1 acceditations were originally not being allowed in, so the queue got longer and uglier. There was nearly a diplomatic incident at one point!

The party itself was FABULOUS. Lots of traditional Belarus vodka, folk singing and dancing and the video of Angelica's promotional tour. Then Angelica herself (arriving in her own van this time with a huge personalized number plate in case you didn't know who it was) dressed in traditional Belarus costume. She sang a folk song, one of her hits and then late on the Eurovision song. This song is really dividing the "press corps". There are those like me who love it, and there are those that think its the musical equivilant of "all mouth and no trousers", as in its a great show but not a great song, but even those think that its a sure fire qualifier.

I got to meet loads of people, including Nikos Terzis (writer of "Shake It", "Die For You" and "Love Me Tonight"), Alex Panayi (Cyprus 1995 and 2000) who will be doing backing vocals for Greece. I got chatting to the Irish songwriter Karl Broderick, who is lovely and its wonderful to see a fan living their Eurovision dream. He told me that some of my comments had given given him sleepless nights, but he appreciated my honesty. I was honestly able to report that there is a huge positive vibe building for Ireland's chances, and that while I didn't see us qualifying, I'm now clearly in the minority.

...and so to bed.....

I'm not sure when Javine queued up to do the "Popstars" auditions three years ago that she knew she's end up backstage in a boxing arena in Kyiv at 8.45 on a Monday morning. There were a lot of vocal set-ups here, before we finally got to see the performance. It now starts with two male backing singers playing the drums on a sidestage before the camera cuts to Javine (not in stage costume) giving a less than 100% performance of the song. There are also three female backing singers who off key for most of the performance and who's early run throughs were very clumbsy. Javine's hair is causing her problem and she's not making eye contact with the camera at times. The stage is unexciting with fire being projected onto the back panels and nothing else. I really like this song, but it has to get a LOT better than this to be a contender.

MALTA

Chiara is on stage dressed in a black dressed that doubles as a tent in the Eurocamp. Her arms are covered in a kind of netting effect and her hair falls from her shoulders and there's a white tape hanging from her side for no apparent reason only to show where her hips are end and the edg of the stage begins. In certain camera shots she looks like she has more chins than the Beijing telephone directory and the stage in blue is very unspectacular. Appearance aside, this was a good vocal performance. Chiara hits the notes without obvious effort, but there's a certain element of "so what?" about this. It's a big girl singing a hackneyed song and there's no magic like there was on stage in 1998. If this was in the semi, I don't think it would qualify.

Hi. Peter here again. Just to tell you in advance that I won't be able to cover all of the rehearsals today. the official welcome reception is at 7pm tonight so I'm going to that. So I will be here hopefully up to Sweden and then I'll review everything I've missed at their second rehearsal tomorrow.

Ok, was slightly bleary eyed as I arrived at the venue this morning. Just a tad too much vodka at the Euroclub last night, but made it in!!!!

UK were forst to rehearse this morning. Javine's outfit looks red/burnt orange and seems to have flame effects on it. Stagewise, 4 of the funnels are compressed into cylinders , and 6 are extended. 3 female backing singers/dancers and 2 male dancers. Two Turkish drums are used as well. the drum seems to be the 'must hae' item on stage at Eurovision 2005!

Th video elements are, not surpisingly, fire and flame and red is the predominant stage colour. The song begins with the 2 backing dancers on the right hand podium with the drums and then moves onto Javine on the main stage. As the song builds the revolving mirrors come into play in the background.

Overall, a good rehearsal for the UK. Javine's vocal was good, No 'Jemini' effect for the UK this year. the backing vocals seemed a little low for me but that could have been the sound in the hall. She got a good reaction in the hall. However, it did seem slightly flat or at least missing something in the performance. But , as I've said before, it's only the first rehearsal and a lot can change in the second one.

So, for me, a good rehearsal for the UK but improvement is needed.

Next onstage was Malta.

Chiara got a huge spontaneous reaction from the crowd in the venue as she came onstage. Herdress seems to be red with glitter.

The stage is a blue water effect. All of the funnels are extended. No backing singers just Chiara on her own. No drums, no dancers, no kitchen sink. :))

There is a gold globe on the background which contrasts well with the blue along with a Waterfall effect on the background video. Also, some dry ice appears in front of the stage which comes across well on camera.

An excellent rehearsal, IMHO, for Malta. Her vocals were really good improving with each performance. Good camera shots also and a HUGE reaction in the hall.

One to watch in the final shakeup I feel

Current Mood: awake
Just spent 20 minutes writing up on todays morning rehearsals and then lost my report.

So just a quick resume.

Another good night at Euroclub was had by all with Slovenia and Belarus both hosting parties.
Particularily like the Belarus folk singers who entertained us.

Made it in also bleary eyed to catch javine on stage for her first rehearsal.
I felt she was holding back on the vocal. Also felt the dancers in the background didnt have a lot
of impact. Needs to improve a lot for me to stand a chance.

Next up was chiara who just stood and belted out Angel as we would expect. Wonderful song and vocal.
Stands a good chance methinks.

Turkey up next and by far the biggest improvement in song and performance that I have seen by
any country yet. Lots of drums and dancing works really well. Possible top 10 for me now.

Finally before lunch was Albania. Starts a bit flat but moves into a good vocal performance from
Ledina. But the backing dancers with their violins is messy and pointless. I think it will suffer
because of this.

After lunch France are on next as they have swapped position with cyprus.

May. 16th, 2005 @ 12:54 pm Turkey Rehearsal May 16th 2005
Turkey next.

Gold is the colour for this one. All of the funnels are extended with gold lights. Background fins and podiums have a video effect of red stars/lights mixed with a 'waves crashing on the shore' effect (I hope that makes sense!)

4 female backing singers/dancers and on VERY tall male Dancer/backing singer(I think that it's the same one from the preview video).

LOTS and different sized drums on stage.

Lots of yelping from everyone at the start of the song. Then we have some acrobatics, some lifts and a one handed somersalut thrown in for good measure :))

Overall a decent first rehearsal for Turkey. Vocals were good but not perfect. I had a problem with the four big drums on stage. They seem to be covered in a red check material which resembles a tablecloth so you get a slight restaurant look which is not good.

May. 16th, 2005 @ 12:56 pm Albania Rehearsal May 16th 2005
Albania was the last rehearsal before lunch.

4 backing dancers with stringless vioin 'prop things' and i male drummer. Lots of vertical mirrors in the background. Green, purple and orange lights on the background fins and a black white and grey slowly moving patterns on the 2 podiums. All funnels are compressed. The song starts with the 4 dancers covered in red chiffon sheets and Ledina takes them off one by one to reveal the 4 female dancers.

At the end, the drummer had a hidden red ribbon in his drum. He runs around the four dancers over at over again wrapping the ribbon around them at the end of the song. mmmmmm.

Excellent vocals from Ledina but the backing routine, personally speaking, is just dreadful. Very lame and comes across that way on screen I feel.

Just a couple of titbits from the press conferences; UK's Javine was very cheerful and keen, she tipped Cyprus and Greece as potential winners and she confirmed to me that "Touch My Fire" was written especially with Eurovision in mind. Shee rather frostilly, and quite properly refused to answer some silly question on her sex life from the Swedish magazine Afonbladet. A chill wind blew through the press conference when the subject of the BBC not showing 50th anniversary show came up. BBC are NOT showing it, that's that. The journalists accredited by the BBC are a little fearful of bringing this up again and a couple have asked me to get another question in tomorrow. Do I risk the wrath of the BBC? The Maltese press conference concentrated too much on 1998 for most people's liking, although Chiara is very charming in person. Turkey's press conference was nearly all singing, very pleasant but very uninformative. Albania's is going on as I type. The language question is raising its head gain.

TURKEY After being disappointed by U.K., and underwhelmed by Malta, this was a really pleasant surprise. Someone has emptied the percussion section of an Istanbul music shop and brought in on stage. There's every possible type of drum, and 1 male backing dancer and 4 female backing singers really give a superb performance. There's yelps, there's well choreographed swirling, and the drum break is really emphasised to full effect. Gulseren is wearing a white dress that your auntie might wear at a wedding which I hope is not the performance costume. This has energy, and a certain magic which is lacking with many songs this year. I would not have given Turkey chance of being in the Top 10 until today. This will do a lot better than many people think, but its not a winner.

ALBANIA Just after Turkey shows us how a ethnic song should be presented, Albania shows us how not to do it. Ledina (who's pretty, but not as stunning as I thought, watching the video) uses the opening to lift red veils off the backing dancers. The 5 dancers "play" toy violins, but it looks ridiculous and distracting. The stage is impressive and Ledina (wearing jeans today) is note perfect, especialy on that soaring note half way through. However, the big let down here is the nonsensical pracing about with the violins and a drum that appears for no obvious reason. I like this song and I thought that this could be a contender but on this showing, it's going to be bottom 10 and maybe worse.

The Svante and NTU press conference is about to start and I need to eat and I want to do a long blog on what's been happening with Donna & Joe, but that requires being in thre different places......

FRANCE

She warmed up by giving a little rendition of the French entry from 1991 (Le Derniere Qui A Parle) which was sweet but from their it went downhill very quickly. Ortal is sharing Glennis's fizzy perm look and is wearing a pink top revealing her slight too wide tummy, and jeans. three girls and two boys accompany here with the second most pointless routine, lots of hand waving and hip shaking, but all rather ordinary. Oral's vocals are VERY shaky, she's hoarse at times and shrill at others. There is nothing about this that is any way appealing and I'm one unhappy bunny as this is the first French song I have liked in years. People around me are talking about this finishing last, and while I wouldn't be that pessimistic it's bottom 10 unless there is a major improvement.

I've just had quick check through the odds to see iif there are any major changes. Belarus seems to be gaining as does Moldova. The first I can understand, the second puzzles me. Lithuania has now dropped out of the Top 10 and if the bookies are right these would qualify;
Hungary, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Belarus, Romania, Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia and Israel. At least two of these are no hopers in my book (Latvia & Estonia), so with Croatia and Ireland at 11 and 12, we're still in with a shout.

SPAIN

Two backing dancers start on elevated side stages and leap on the main stage where the girls are dressed in yellow orange and blue outfits and do the flamenco-lite routine. The stage is alive with amazing summer colours. There's some quite good and simple choreography going on and the girls belt out the song perfectly on every take. The little rap break is delivered by the guy who looks like Seville's most dangerous mugger and while some people hate it, it does break up a pretty repetitive song. This isn't going to set the scoreboard on fire, but Spain will not need their Big 4 status to qualify for 2006.

(SERBIA &) MONTENEGRO

I've put the Serbia in brackets because this is 100% a Montenegro entry. From the football style chants of "Crna Gora" by their fans before they arrived on stage to everything about the performance. The 6 boys stand at the back of the stage and raise their arms in succession as the intro cuts in. Then two of them walk to the front of the stage and divide the signing duties between them. One the first take, the second boy (who has a much stronger voice) drowned out the first, but they were mixed better on later takes. Then there's a very unnatural break and five boys form a line by to do a "Zorba The Montinegrin" shuffle, while one beats on the rhythem on timpani. Then there is a lot of jumping around with arms in the air while the chous is repeated again and again. The "wopas" break is the best bit, before the song runs out of steam. I was ready to slate this after seeing it in the arena, but watching on screen it's much better. I'm also told that we're seeing elements of the Montinegrin national dance and that the boys will be in traditional Montinegrin clothes on Saturday night.  It might make more sense inthat setting, but this is just too much at the moment.

Into the afternoon session and rehearsals from France, Spain and Serbia & Montenegro.

France was my 2nd favourite pre contest and my partner Ryan's favourite. As a result I phoned him during reheasal so he
could hear it live. He liked what he heard I think, but my thoughts were rather mixed. Nice simple choreography but too
much of a ropey vocal performance from Ortal. Needs to improve loads to get into my new top 10.

Spain were up next and they were in very colourful long frock ala almost flamenco like. Lots of twirling involved here.
A nice routine and lovely vocals from the girls. Not so happy with the raspy male vocal though. Overall a good rehearsal
and I can see Spain doing well with this Ketchupy song.

On to Serbia & Montenegro saw lots of cossack and almost military style dance routines from the 6 lads with No Name.
A good routine with a mixture of good and bad vocals. The two lead vocalists are rather pretty in the camera shots.
I dont think this will do as well as some are saying though

Off back to see Sweden , Ukraine and germany next.
Then away to get spruced up for the reception Party at the Palace.

Hard to judge this because Martin is fluffing bits of the song and of the routine. The stage is wonderful, it's bring lights and really adds to the show. Martin is wearing a little hat and hasn't shaved a looks a little like David Beckham. He's keeping the same routine as the Swedish Final & preview video. It needs to get better and I'm sure it will, but my dark horse is a little lame based on this.

France were up next as they switched with Cyprus.

3 female backing singers and 2 male dancers. Funnels compressed. Video effect is while disks on a black background moving and blinking. the vertical mirrors slowly revolve. The podiums have a black and grey flowing light effect. Then the rest of the stage has a gold colour.

the song starts with everyone standing except the 2 male dancers who are on chairs. This was not the best rehearsal of the day. ortal's vocals were distinctly ropey . She was finding it pretty difficult to hold her pitch. Pretty disappointing for me.

I know that I'm in a pretty small minority who like this, so I'm probably going to be more favourable than most others to this. The scarey looking lead singer is the in shot for most of the performance and a guitarist, keyboard player and drummer make up the band. They have added two rather odd looking dancers, one on either side of the stage. They are in handcuffs so most of their "dance" is from the waist down. There's a bit of breakdancing when the boys work themselves free. This sounds ok, it is VERY in your face an at times it might scream a bit of desperation, but it's very different from anything else, and if an old(ish) Eurovision fan likes it, so might others. A lot of people are saying that the hosts will come last this year, but I don't think it will do badly.

Spain next.

Girls in blue, gold and yellow dressed repectively. 2 dancers and Mr. Rapper on stage.

The song starts with the two dancers, one on each podium. they then jump onto the main part of the stage.and join the girls.

Funnels compressed again for this song. Rainbow coloured spinning block of light on stage for this which makes it a very colourful and effective set. Good vocals from the girls. Mr. Rapper was ok and thankfully not on stage for very long!! :))

Overall, a good performance from Spain. They should be happy with this.

Red Storm clouds is the video effect for Serbia & Montenegro. Funnels compressed once again. Lots of red in the stage this year. Stage actually looked quite dark. 2 double dums on stage also.

Two band members on stage at the front. the other four start off behind with their arms in the air.. Then the 2 in front join the four in the back and start dancing. This looks like a cross between a greek Wedding dance and Morris dancing and does not come across very well on camera at all!!

Ironically, when the dancing starts, forked lightning start sto form in the red storm clour video effect.

Overall, a disappointing performance for me from Serbia & Montenegro

Sweden were next up.

4 females on stage with Martin. 2 who just dance and 2 who are backing singers/dancers. Funnels extended on this one with a different video effect on each. various colours and shapes. Pretty much the same look and camera direction as melodifestivalen.

There is a new ending on the song though. Instead of the music finishing before Martin sings the last words, the music continues onto the end of the song. This is a big improvement for me.

Hard to judge this rehearsal. The vocals at the start were a bit ropey from Martin. then he stopped singing the high parts altogether, probably holding back. So, we'll have to wait and see what happens in rehearsal 2 tomorrow.

I've just seen the first run through by Germany. The stage is blue, Gracia and the band are in black and it's quite well performwed, but I'm not seeing this anywhere near the Top 10.

I now need to iron my frock for tonight's welcome party and I will not be back in the venue until lunch time tomorrow, but Peter and Andrew will probably beat me to the venue.
