May. 18th, 2005 @ 10:33 am Three blogs in one....
Ooops I seem to have upset some people yestrday, but read on there might be better news later.....

I'm going to update you on three things before I go off for a bit of shopping and coming back for this afternoon's full semi-final rehearsal. a BIG thanks to Andrew for staying behind and reporting on the last three songs last night.

IRELAND
I was on radio back to Ireland this morning and apparently Terry Wogan has made a comment that Ireland has "lost the plot" and would possibly finish with "nul points". I'm not sure if that is true, but I think Terry might be in for a surprise. I have to be honest, when I came out here I thought we were candidates for the bottom 5 in the semi. Since then, a few things have changed my mind. First of all the draw is making more impact than I though, with both Bulgara and Slovenia (the songs that come before and after us) being a lot pooer than I thought they would be. Secondly, the routine is now better than before. It is much sharper, emphasising the Irish dancing. There is apparently going to be a camera sweep along the line of dancing feet (ala Riverdance) and for the bit where the dancers vamp around Joe, he's going to give a cheeky wink to camera. As far as I concerned, that's a great idea, and it really plays on the "little boy with the keys to the sweetshop" angle that appeals to many. (Dare I use the word "endearing")?

Unlike last year the Irish team have been at almost all the parties. They have been friendly and approachable hee in Kyiv. They are taking comments on board and really working the press pack like professionals. On stage Donna And Joe have been faultless vocally and are almost 100% there from a stage movement and camera angles point of view. The songwriter Karl Broderick made an excellent point at Sunday's press conference when he said that this was a contest song. It wasn't meant a CD or radio song, but as something that would fo well at Eurovision and could provide the chance of providing a "show".  Don't judge Ireland's chance by the preview video, certainly don't judge it by the "Late Late Show". Thanks to the negative comments from that performance there was an emergency meeting to re-think the presentation and I think we are now in the shake-up for qualification. We're not going to win, but we're not going to disgrace ourselves, for sure.

PARTIES etc.
There were four events last night. Peter and I went to the "Viking Party" when Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Ireland all performed (Iceland and Sweden "unplugged"). It was a great party and the highlight for me was  seeing Geir Ronning and Martin Stenmarck being joined by Joe McCaul  for "Suspicious Minds". It was ludicrous, it was amazing, it was funny and most of all for the Scandinavian press it was a story!

Then I went outdoors for the live concert. Lithuania, Latvia, Israel (with sound problems), Estonia, Macedonia, Croatia and Germany all performed to mixed audience reaction. The two highlights foe me were Ukraine (with backing vocals by Germany's Gracia) which got he locals going and Greece. Helena was in a very sexy brown dress and the routine did not involve the silly braces trick. On this performance, Greece was much better. It looked less threatening and more like they were enjoying themselves. I was not alone feeling this. Please Greece if you want to win, be more like this performance and less like the rehearsal.

The show went live on Ukrainian television and I got  text message to say I had just been seen all over Ukraine waving my Irish flag (very surreal). President Yuschenko  came and waved to the crowd. The international delegations chanted his name (and the locals were highly amused). Ruslana did her show. To be honest a little of Ruslana goes  a long way for me. Three songs and I needed  cherryade.

Then it was upstairs for the "Big 3 plus 1" party (UK, France, Spain + Monaco). There were loads of unplugged versions here. Some were great (Sweden, Austria, Switzerland surprisingly), some weren't (Turkey, Estonia). I retired at just after midnight, as I'm still shaving off a cold and I was on radio this morning.

I missed the big birthday bash for Angelica on a boat.

THE FINAL
Yesterday I gave you the semi-final running order, here is the final;
There's the usual intro before we get an animation and a 3D flower. It cuts to the auditorium, lots of spheres, guitars and a 30 seccond bust of Ars-Nova (don't ask!). Then Ruslana does a remoxed "Wild Dances". The hosts arrive on stage five and a half minutes in. There's a explanatioon of the voting. and the first song's postcard starts at 7:15  and again every postcard is 40 seconds.  As we knew, the commercial break comes after Montenegro. Those not taking a break will get  "Preparation video". A short speech from the hosts then the second 12 songs are performed.

After the reprises (chosen by the heads of each delegation). Ther is the interval with Ars-Nova and Ruslana. The interval last 8 miinutes exactly. Then DJ Pasha interview Svante for a minute and the first eliminated semi-final votes (probably Austria or Lithuania, because I don't see both of these qualifying). After 18 countries have voted there is a commercial break. After the voting Ruslana and President Yushenko present the prize (I think that this is the first time a Head Of State has presented the prize). Then the reprise. The running time is 3 hours and 20 minutes but the way things have gone here, who know?

Just a question. Is there anything else you'd like yo know?

May. 18th, 2005 @ 11:47 am (no subject)
Good morning from an even hotter Kyiv. Things are warming up nicely now with the weather. Its going to top 26 degrees C today.
Its even warmer in the bouncy castle press centre. Today is the first day of Semi final dress rehearsals. First is at 3pm
then another at 9pm. Accredited press will get in for free this afternoon and I have a bought ticket for the evening when
I will sit with some of the OnEurope team.

I have my live link with Forth2 at 4.10pm(Kyiv time) so I may try and catch the beginning of the afternoon show then move
to the press centre. After I have seen the full dress rehearsal at night I will then come up with my break down of the chances
of each country and an overall top 10 of my favourites and an additional top 10 likely qualifiers.

Last night was a busy night for parties. The Nordic/Irish party I missed due to late rehearsals so I came into the Euroclub
open air concert by Ruslana. It was a spectacular show of lights and pyrotechnics and flames.
Then on upstairs to the combined UK/France/ Spain party in the nightclub. It was by far the best and busiest party so far
and in fact the best I have been to in all the years past. Plentiful food and drink was consumed gratefully by the throngs.
Javine was spotted enjoying the food too and had a rather subtle way of not appearring to eat much, by taking a small scewer
of chicken kabab and removing a piece of chicken from almost every other scewer on the plate.
All the entertainement was provided by our resident Eurovision DJ all night and on the stage every artist present(almost)
did a live acoustic set. In all we saw Global Kryner, Lise Darly of Monaco, Shiri Maimon(Israel), Nuno from Belguim,
Suntribe from Estonia,Martin from Macedonia,Marie- an from Andorra,Vanilla Ninja from Switzerland(estonia), Chiara from Malta,
Gulseren from Turkey,Constantinos from Cyprus,Martin from Sweden along with Joe from Ireland who joined him on stage for a duet.
Helena from greece, Feminem from Bosnia, Javine for the UK, Son De Sol from Spain and Ortal from France. Phew!!!!
It lasted for hours then was followed by back to back Eurovision songs . Ended up chatting to Paddy O'Connell the BBC3
commentator for the final and Simon Jones who is here doing PR for Javine. A great night ended with me getting to bed around 3.30am.

Before we begin let me mention that Andy Mikheev is also blogging this afternoon's rehearsal as it happens here
We are staying far apart so as not to influene each other. You can make your own mind up on who to believe! (Bearing in mind I've already had one beer today).

About this Entry

May. 18th, 2005 @ 03:22 pm And so it begins..
The shows starts with Macha in a emerald green outfit and Pasha in a regular suit with a grandfather collar and a green motif setting off Macha's dress. Then there's Hopa (cossacks), energic folk dancing, a Soviet syle military choice DZL (heavy metal ballet). Then the rules are explained. The postcards are annoymous and like last year so unless there is somethiong special in them, I will ignore them.

AUSTRIA
This was signalled as being "Albania" on screen (oops!). The performance is slik, the costumes are the same as before (a pinafore and tracksuits). Very energetic, well performed, yodelling. This is still a serious contender to qualify.

LITHUANIA
Laura in a sexy white dress and knee length boots. Some very nice and simple choreography. The Lovers are in black. The stage has some nice red search light effects and white stars. Laura looks great and sings well. If this was one of the last 5 songs to be performed, it might well qualify, butI don't fancy it's chances from this draw.

PORTUGAL
I now see every song is being introduced as "Albania". The first really poor performance of the day. Rui can't be heard (he's singing far too low). Luciana sings well but looks ridiculous. She looks like she had a bad hair day and put on a baseall cap but the hair still can't be controlled. The dancing is far too much and distracting. A certain non-qualifier.

MOLDOVA
The main is focus on the singer. Now the guitarists are emphasising the "heys" in the song. There's lots of mad running around. Grandma can now clearly be seen early in the show sitting on her rocking chair. Grandma walks up as is introduced as "My Grandma" by the singer. The Ukrainian girls around me love this. It won't get one vote west of Vienna, but it's got a serious chance to qualify from Eastern European votes.

LATVIA
The boys have lovely white jackets and shirts over jeans as they start on stools. The short one (with a nice orange motif on his jacket) walks up then other bigger one follows, they do the chorus in sign-lanuage but the harmonies are not as sweet as earlier in the week. I don't see this qualifying.

MONACO
Lise looks a little shiny in the face (more blusher please!) but the red and pink dress looks stunning. She looks nervous at times but really belts out the song. If Eurovision traditionalists vote this will do well but this is not a qualifier for me.

ISRAEL
Shiri in her pink satin curtains dress has three backing singers in black and a piano and guitarist on stage. This is so much better than the ballads that went before and the performance is strong, warm and attractive. I think that this will qualify, but I seem to be in a minority.

BELARUS
The costume changes are great, the dancing is wonderful but today the voice was a huge disappointment. Angelica looks stunning but she needs to sing a lot better than this. I'm VERY disappointed. This is no longer a certain qualifier.

A break.

NETHERLANDS
OK I take it back. Today Glennis has been squeezed much more tightly into the dress and looks great. (she looked FABULOUS at the welcome party in a black cocktil frock) and I felf slightly guily for being so unkind earlier this week. There are lovely white search lights as a backdrop, Glennis sings magnificently. Now a sure fire qualifier.

ICELAND.
Selma wears a red two piece, with knee length shorts (NOT flattering) and a silly red hood, which she pulls back. Today it left a silly gold leaf on her forehard which was very distracting. This is lively, well choeographed and will almost certainly qualify, but it's far from a winner. It just lacks that certain something.

BELGIUM
Dark suit, red shirt, dark stage. Nuno grabs the mike and walks upstage halfway through. It has tons of emotion and Nuno is singing much better than before, but this nice and sweet song belongs in a musical and it won't qualify.

ESTONIA
Lots of energy, it's all in tune and the dancing is simple and effective. Given that teenagers will be disproportially high in the telvoting, this might scrap in, but it's still one sandwitch short of a picnic for me.

NORWAY
Bloody hell this is powerful on screen. An orange flag on the mike stand and lots of sharp camera swoops. I don't like it, I don't want it to win, but there's no question; this will qualify.

ROMANIA
Long pause before this started (this is the most difficult set change of the semi). Luminita is a green an white boustier over jeans. Loads of dry ice. Luminita is missing camera shots all over the place and she still looks silly drumming. There's the angle grinding noise. This could well go the way of Belgium 2004. No charisma on camera murdering a good song. In with a slim chance of qualifying only.

HUNGARY
Lots of enery with everyone in black (the singer is in a beautiful black blouse and half dress half shorts). The low register here is badly off key at times. It is eye catching, it will qualify, but not a winner based on this.

FINLAND
Geir in a lovely pale blue t-shirt under a white jacket and jeans. The backing singers in white. There's some lovely soft focus camera moments. The backing singers give some very effective and simple framing of Geir who is note perfect. If there's a God in Eurovision heaven this will qualify. Best vocal of the day (tied with Glennis).

The Green room break announces that you can now vote for your favoute Eurovision song on the official site...cue the build up to Copenhagen.

MACEDONIA
Martin in a pale pink jacket, a tshirt and jeans. The girls have scrubbed up well but look rather frosty and nervous on stage. Martin looks awful as he tries to dance, and he doesn't make eye contact with the camera. Not a qualifier.

ANDORRA
And the award for the most improved performance from the reheasals goes to Andorra. There's a gothic theme to the clothes. Marian in a gold ball gown and the now topless male dancers with blackened eyes, There's fan twirling a plenty, and the choreography is much better on screen. The screaming at the end is still bad. (Can someone please turn down Anabel Conde's microphone). If they get this right, it could cause a surprise.

SWITZERLAND
The girls in white. The stage looks great, and it sounds great. There's a real kick ass ending to this and it gets a great reaction. Another sure fire qualifier.

CROATIA
Boris is a beautiful black suite with a white shirt and tie. The girls in their porno-bridal look. Boris needs to stop squinting at the camera but the sound is magnificent. One Balkan song will qualify and this is it.

BULGARIA
Welcome to a town called Dullsville, actually no, you've passed Dullsvile and kept going for another 10 miles. The lead singer is still in his pyjamas. and there loads of unnecessary shots of the band. No effects, no drama, a boring staging. How to make 3 minutes seems like three hours.

IRELAND
I'll do a LONG post on this later...

SLOVENIA
Omar looks good and sounds better than he did all week. White tshirt and light pants with a black jacket that looks like a bird swallowed a lot of mercury and then shat on it. It's much better at the cresendo, another huge improvement. Don't write this off.

DENMARK
Pink shirt, dark suit and sneakers (a real fashion faux pas for me) on Jakob. He delivers the song very well. He smiles and is charming. The problem is that everyone likes this but no one loves it, and it would have done well with juries( who gave marks to every song) but with televoters where you only vote for your favourite, this will lose out.

POLAND
Ivan in a white jacket etched with maroon. The dancing girls in the same colours. This looks GREAT on stage. It's got more energy than a flea after 10 red bulls. GREAT reaction. Another qualifier I think.

Our hiosts have changed clothes and they signal the start of televoted by ringing tubular bells. The postcards were done from today's performances.

IRELAND
On the good side, it sounds great (even the backing girls are in key). The routine is the best it has been, but the changes I hoped for are not there. Joe's "cheeky chappie" grin would be better if it was a wink. The string stabs in the song which were supposed to be sharp camera changes are not working. There is is one big problem; the backing dancers look great in revealing back and gold out and Joe is fine in a black jacket black tshirt with a gold pattern in jeans. HOWEVER Donna looks awful in a black dress with gold edging which is totally unflatting and makes her look like a badly packed parcel. The black thigh length boots are ok but the dress HAS to be changed. Donna looks fat (which she isn't). Her hair is fine. We're in with shout though, I spoke to several people here and they liked it a lot.

Lots of people in red throwing shapes for the interval. I now need to eat (I've survived on party food and water for 24 hours), if I was in prison I'd be better fed!

I will name my 10 finalists after I see the show in the hall tonight and hear the crowd reaction.

May. 18th, 2005 @ 06:37 pm (no subject)
hello all and a big thanks to Keith for reviewing all of the first Semi Final Dress rehearsal.

I managed to sit in the hall for the first 8 songs up to the first break. I then had to hotfoot it over to the press
centre to do my live link with Radio Forth2.I think it went well again with some chat on the parties and Javines
chances and how things are shaping up overall for the UK. Mentioned also the procedures from Semi to Final and how
political/ neighbourly voting could allow a few freaky results on Thursday.

Raced back to the hall in time to see the last section after the second break. So that was the last 9 countries.
Keith has already given you full reviews especially of the middle section so I will just quickly run through my thoughts
on the ones I saw.

Austria was a nice sweet and slick performance , still stands a good chance with this to qualify.

Lithuania was a nicely sung modern pop song. Laura looks fab in white. But i think this may just fail to qualify.

Portugal is a great performance IMHO. She looks just plain stupid though with her hat. Still a possible qualifier.

Moldova is very energetic(apart from Granny bless her) and went down huge in the hall(well the few hundred that were there).
Granny is the funniest gimmick this year. I am now certain this will qualify for the final.

Latvia is a nice ballad by two sweet young lads. I am bound to like it then. They still are doing the sign language at the end.
This will not qualify.

Monaco was a Lovely ballad and Lise has a faboulous dress on. This could sneak through.

Israel also was well sung with a nice dress. different to Monaco though. Changes to English midway through. Also a sneaker through.

Belarus was pure theatre with a very camp routine and lots of costume changes. Brilliantly done but not so good on
the singing. Still a definite qualifier though.

Then I come back in as Macedonia start. This actually came across a little bit better today. Still wont qualify though.

Andorra is going for the gay vote now. The two dancers have their tops off and have been dipped in fake tan and oil
by the looks of them, black fans are the gimmick here. well enough sung but again I have heard her sing this better.
It will not qualify.

Switzerland have come on now in leaps and bounds, all in white they have aquired a few extra gimmicks, smoking jackets
(and I mean really smoking) and sparks from their guitars at the climax to the song. Great song and a definite qualifier.

Croatia has the same crazy drummer doing his handstand near the end. This song builds well enough, good girl backing vocals
boris was a tad ropey though. This went down fairly well in the hall and could qualify.

Bulgaria was really well sung today, I dont like the song but this may pick up decent points from the east and neighbourly
voting therefore could sneak through as a result.

Ireland is just lots of fun now. Donna was looking good in her dress(sorry Keith) and Joe looked all relaxed and smiley.
Good routine and like the Irish dancing. This could sneak through.

Slovenia had a few sound problems in Omar's ear but he still sung this brilliantly and his classical singer was great.
I think this may well qualify.

Denmark was very pleasant and well put together, nice vocals but not sure it will qualify.

Poland was more theatre and a grand performance. Near the end his dancers rip open his shirt revealing a rather nice torso.
Well it sure got my vote but I am a sucker for naked flesh.

Then to the voting period and then the pretend opening of the envelopes.
The 10 countries that got through(pretend remember) were in order of opening

Austria
Netherlands
Latvia
Monaco
Ireland
Lithuania
Denmark
Poland
Iceland
Switzerland

I reckon 6 of those could be right.

More later

Andrew
May. 18th, 2005 @ 11:26 pm I'm ready to call....
After watching this afternoon in the press centre I watched tonight's rehearsal in the arena. Some general comments; The vocals on some songs are far too high in the mix in the hall, there was a big mix-up on the postcard before Netherlands, I'm not sure how it looked on screen. The backing track of Bulgium could not be heard until 5 seconds into the song and (just like this afternoon, they cannot get Norway's intruments off stage and Romania on stage in the 40 second postcard. So you end up with Romania sitting there for 20 seconds doin nothing. It looks dreadful. Also the English in the script needs to be tidied up.

All that aside there was no doubt what got the best reaction in the hal, is is Moldova. Amazing but true. Norway and Netherlands also went ok.

So choosing 10.

First eliminate the no hopers;
Portugal (even worse than before)
Bulgaria
Slovenia
Belgium
Macedonia

Then knock out the ones that are not quite good enough
Lithuania
Latvia
Estonia
Monaco
Austria
Romania
Denmark

That leaves me with 12

So in order from most likely to make it here goes;
Netherlands (another great performance and they got rid of the awful shot of Glennis's hips)
Switzerland
Poland (making a huge improvement)
Norway
Belarus
Israel
Moldova
Croatia
Iceland
Hungary
---------------
Ireland
Finland
Andorra

That's right, I think we will miss out by one poition. Hungary is vocally very poor but the dancing keeps you interested. Iceland which should have walked through is really struggling. Belarus was better vocally tonight but Angelica's vocals need to be lower in the mix. Donna needs a new dress (I've told everyone I could about this, including he head of delegation and the songwriter, I can do no more, but it could be too late). Andorra is a real dark horse coming up on the rails.

Tomorrow I shop, but I will post a blog on the day's eventsbefore I go into the arena.
