May. 20th, 2005 @ 12:36 am A few surprises!!
Current Mood: confused
Hi

Peter here. Just back in press centre. Well, i didn't do very well with my predictions did I!! I got 5 out of the ten qualifiers but I had 4 of the others in my bubbling under list. In shock at Netherlands and FYR Macedonia fpr opposite reasons! It will take a little time for the new draw to settle in for the final but on first reflection, Malta or latvia for a ballad win, Greece or Bosnia or Switzerland for an up tempo win and Moldove fopr a complete surprise!!!

I will go to bed tonight pexplexed as to why FYR Macedonia has qualified and Glennis Grace is going home. Bizarre!

The only think I don't know yet is how the sound was on TV.

About this Entry
May. 20th, 2005 @ 12:22 pm So how was it for you?
Where do I begin?

I just had the one of the most wonderful but disturbing, exciting but disappointing, evenings of my life. To use the cliche, it was a real "emotional rollercosater". Our pre-show preparations began in a great (and cheap!) Ukrainian canteen style restaurant where a gang of five UK and Irish guys were joined by a local fan, and we compared notes on the week and our hopes for the evening. We exchanged predictions before heading to the venue. To get into the secure area around the venue we had to pass through some locals demonstrating in a peaceful manner (handing out leaflets). It would appear that for some people here the "Orange Revolution" has not been the huge success it has been painted outside Ukraine. There was  really heavy security prressence all evening.

In one of the bars outside the venue we sampled a beer and watched the bus loads of supporters arriving. There was huge support for Belarus, with Poland and and Ireland also well represented. Getting through the metal detectors and into the arena proper was relativly problem free (none of the nonsense of Copenhagen). I met up with Donna & Joe and wished then luck. They were excited but nervous, but I never felt that the whole week's events were getting to them. They seemed to be having a ball!. All of the Irish team this year are the most friendly and pleasant people I can remember at Eurovision. It was a pleasure to be part of the Irish delegation.

We had a good seat in the front block, 13 rows in, and straight in front of the stage. The perfect view!. As for the performances, the one that surprised me, or were any different from expected;

MOLDOVA : A huge crowd favourite. I hate this drumming granny gimmick, but there is no doubt it is working.
BELARUS : Was it my imagination or was Angelica's microphone brought down during the opening? Was someone trying to sabotage a favourite?
ISRAEL : Warm, professional, and I would have been very upset if political voting had stopped it qualifying.
NETHERLANDS : Amazing staging, great voice, but no matter how you dressed it up, it was an awful and unoriginal song.
ICELAND : Completly flat. This is one song which died because of a bad dance routine. I actually saw this bad result coming
HUNGARY : The dancing gets a huge reaction, but the vocals were still very shaky.
ROMANIA : Much better than before, but I still think that it lacked something.
NORWAY : A HUGE reaction in the hall (I'm hearing that there were sound level problems at home).
SWITZERLAND : I got really nervous because this was not as good as early in the week.
IRELAND : All the hard work paid off, this was as good as it was at any point during the week.
DENMARK : Much more confident than before. A real crowd pleaser.
SLOVENIA : The crowd loved it, my ears bled fropm he cacophany of the last minute.

The interval was fine, but left me cold, and as for the results;

HUNGARY (number 1 in the final) : I was not surprised to see this qualify. It is a great show opener for Saturday, but it's not a winner now.
ROMANIA (number 4 in the final) : This was a small surprise to me. I had it as the 13th most likely to qualify. It will be some  contrast after Malta,  but  again it's not a winner.
NORWAY (number 5 in the final) : No surprise, I don't like it but it had to qualify, but this draw is doing it no favours.
MOLDOVA (number 7 in the final) : No surprise, I really hate this, but those who backed it at 150/1 are smiling. Watch this, it is VERY dangerous, even fro this draw position.
ISRAEL (number 11 in the final) : No surprise for me, I was delighted that this quality song made it. A similar draw to the semi, but it's a great contrast to the songs  that come before it. This will do well.
DENMARK (number 13 in the final, straight after the break). I would have been shocked before seeing the show, but this caught a real vibe with the audience, so it wasn't the shock to me that it was to some people. However from this draw, I don't see it doing well.
FYR MACEDONIA (number 15 in the final). I was shocked and horrified, as was everyone around me.  How did this qualify? Friendly neighbours  is the only explanation for this.  In a final where they are fighting for votes  with 8 other Balkan counties, this must surely do badly.
CROATIA : Some were shocked, I wasn't. I always had this in my Top 10. Don't rule this out from doing very well on Saturday.
SWITZERLAND : No surprise and it would have been a disgrace had this not qualified, and if any song can save Eurovision 2005 from gimmicks and retro-nonsense, this is it.
There was one place left at this point, and we hadn't heard Netherlands, Belarus, Iceland,  Austria, Poland, Finland or Ireland. It was sweaty palms time. For the last country, a great draw, for everyone else, tears.
And finally.......... LATVIA ( number 23 in the final). Shock, horror, dismay, gasps, tears, you name it. Some people had this on their "just might make it list". I never saw it qualifying. It did work well in the hall, but ahead of the others that missed out, this was a travesty.

Six of my predictions had made it. Netherlands, Iceland, Belarus and Poland had missed out, with Romania, Denmark, Macedonia and Latvia making it instead.  Last year the most accurate prediction was 9/10. This year nobody seemed it get more than 6/10, and many had only 4 or 5. You could see the gloom descending on the Dutch and the huge Bularus fan club. As I left my seat and went back to the foyer there was one word being repeated over and over "Macedonia?". No one can believe that this made it. People could understand Romania, Croatia, Moldva and at a stretch Latvia, but Macedonia????

I decided to go to the "winners" press conference rather than go on to the party . This was a really bad idea.  It took ages to find the venue and I had to endure some of the most stupid questions of the week.
Shiri "tell us a bout your country".... "Israel is a beautful place with warm weather and good food".
Martin " how will you celbrate winning on Saturday"...."If I do not get the win, I will be number two" (you said it!)
....and so it went on....there was good food and free dink at the party and I had to endure "Jakob, do you think that Norway or Sweden is your biggest rival".  I was not impressed. I was told that the results from 11-25 won't be announced until Sunday. So at the moment everyone is claiming to be 11th!

When I did make it to the party there was what I can only descibe as a "mood" on the delgrades. The Dutch were spitting fire. They were confident that Glennis would qualify and they thought that Marian (Dutch born but singing for Andorra) might give them a double celebration. Instead they got nothing, and they fear that Dutch television might now have second thoughts about Eurovision. The Finns were disappointed but not surprised. The Poles likewise.  The Slovenians were sulking.  The Belarussians didn't even show up, before I left.  Talking to Ukrainians about Belarus this morning they say that there was a real "chill factor". Belarus (the country) is not liked around here, being the last remnant of a communist dictatorship in Europe. Add to that the one million Euro publicity campaign for Angelica and many people were not going to vote for it. For me, that's a shame because this was a good song, with a great stage show, but politics is always an issue at Eurovision.

For Ireland it was a case of so near but yet so far. Coming here, most of us thought we only had a small chance of making it, but as we saw the performance get better and better during the week, and more and more people thought that we would qualify, our hopes rose.  Speaking to Karl Broderick, at th party he just asked that I be nice. That is no problem. I thought we did a great job this week. We may not have made it, but we certainly did not disgrace ourselves like last year.

Some Irish delegates were taking consolation that this result would be the end of "You're A Star", and I suspect they are right. The show has preobably run its course in it current format. I will post my thought on the way I think Ireland should go, over the next day or two. The news from local radio back in Ireland is that there is a huge negative reaction to the result. "The Balkan are ganging up on us".

The first rehearsal of the final is on this afternoon, and I will cover it from the press centre.

May. 20th, 2005 @ 01:00 pm Another Day
Shellshocked is the word to describe the feeling today after last night's result. Most people who predicted a top ten got 5 to 6 right, much lower than lasy year's average. Still waiting to see if we get the 11 to 25 placings.

I'll be going to tonight's dress rehearsal and i'll post a review on here after it. Someone posted a comment on an entry further down that I should stop writing my reports as I obviously had no idea about ESC and i should be ashamed!. Trouble is, with televoting, it is getting harder to predict.

Anyway, I hope most peoplke enjoy my comments. YOu cannot please all of the people all of the time. :))

May. 20th, 2005 @ 02:25 pm (no subject)
Good afternoon from a much cooler Kyiv. It has just been raining so the sauna of the press centre is switched off for now.
How can I possibly follow Keiths report about the result, long and full of useful comment.

However I was just say what I feel. Like everyone else I am in total shock. Macedonia is what put me over the edge.
I know fully why they got into the final but am appalled as it was totally undeserving. I got 5 right and if I hadnt
changed mine at the last minute yesterday I would have got 6 right. A pretty poor result compared to last years prediction
of 9 out of 10.

I have just heard on the grapevine that we may find out the 11th-25th places and points later on today. Will keep you
posted if we find them.

Back to the qualifiers though I got Hungary,Norway,Moldova,Croatia and Switzerland. Romania I took out at the last minute.
All of them fully deserved to qualify based on last nights performance.
Israel,Denmark and Latvia I liked all of their song and they were all in my probable category, so i cannot be unhappy
at them getting through. Macedonia is the shocker, badly sung and a silly dance routine. It will never win.

So what does all this mean for the overall draw in the final? Well first off i think this has become a really strong
start to Final , possible the strongest for years. I can see positive merits in all of the first 12 songs before the break.

Hungary off first will depend on her vocal which hasnt always been the best, the dancing compensates.
Possible top 5.

UK can only recieve some damage from coming after Hungary. Javine needs to pull off a great stage show and vocal to compensate.
Still possible top 10 but with any kind of hitch 11th-15th.

Malta is now one of only two female ballads and will be sung wonderfully by Chiara. This will compensate for it being a ballad
that is fine but not having that X factor. Top 5 finish.

Romania up next will be the first of a number of heavy drum oriented songs. I think a solid performance will see it go top10.

Norway next is heavy rock and different to others around it by not being ethnic. Possible winner.

Turkey next will also not be overly damaged by coming after Norway. Great performance like in rehearsal will see this finish
somewhere between 8th-15th.

Moldova is the surprise package this year. Wholly underated by many here until last day of rehearsals it moved into many of
our top 10s. Great energetic performance with granny being the funniest gimmick for years. This will do scarily well
as lots of us still dont like the song but love the performance. Will finish 4th-10th.

Albania up next will get lost by those around it. Possible 12th-20th

Cyprus is still another drumming song with greek ethnic feel. I like it and its a steady performer in rehearsals.
10-20th finish.

Spain is a totally different sound after so many drums. Good draw for Spain. Top 10 finish.

Israel is a lovely ballad, Well sung and an interesting draw. possible 10th-20th.

Serbia & Montenegro are up last before a break so will do well as its different again to Israel. Possible 6th-12th.

After the break is Denmark and this was done really well in the Semi. Deserved to go through but its draw position
means it will have had its day. 12-22nd finish.

Sweden is next and should do pretty well sandwiched between Denmark and Macedonia.
Possible 6th-12th place.

FYR Macedonia is a shocker. So doesnt deserve to be in the final line up. Needs to improve 150% to finish in a Finalists
position for next year. It will not though!!! 20th -24th finish.

Ukraine and the host country. Its a rubbish song performed well. Will pick up odd points here and there so wont finish bottom 3.
Best hope 15th-21th.

Germany is also performed well enough but just wont be popular in the final countdown. Finish possible bottom but at best as high
as 20th.

Croatia is another good draw as it is a total contrast to those around it. May work in their favour and with Balkan votes could
finish 8th-14th.

Greece is the big favourite. Great draw position now for Greece and a great performance. This will win if it going to be uptempo
year again this year. Winner or at worst top 5.

Russia will pick up some eastern votes but thats about it. Best hope 16th-22th.

Bosnia & Herzegovina had a good draw near the end and it is deminished a tad by having Switzerland next to it. but i still think
a good performance will help it do quite well. Typical Eurovision fodder and a possible 5th-12th.

Switzerland have an excellent position now in the draw. Third from last and a great performance. This is possible top 5 and
a good outside bet to win now.

Latvia is the last ballad of the evening and a great draw position. But I feel the potential for ropey vocals may spoil its
chances to take full advantage. A cracking vocal will see this finish 8th-14th. But a more likely result is 12-20th.

Finally we have France. This should stand out at the end and a good performance will see it finish top 12. But Ortal who is
a lovely lady doesnt always nail it. So most likely 10-18th.

So there you have my run down of the finalists.

I will now stick my neck out and write down my top24 songs in order.

1.Norway
2.Greece
3.Switzerland
4.Malta
5.Hungary
6.Moldova
7.Spain
8.Romania
9.Bosnia & Herzegovina
10.Sweden
11.Serbia & Montenegro
12.Croatia
13.Turkey
14.United Kingdom
15.France
16.Israel
17.Cyprus
18.Latvia
19.Albania
20.Denmark
21.Ukraine
22.Russia
23.FYR Macedonia
24.Germany

So there you have it before rehearsals today. Will watch the afternoon one in the press centre and will be in the hall
for the evening show. So some countries could move up and down.

More later.

About this Entry
Andrew
May. 20th, 2005 @ 03:21 pm Moving right along.... (don't forget to refesh).
I'm in the press centre reporting on the press centre for the first rehersal of the final (updating as we go along, so don't forget to refresh).

The show has a lovely nature based opening before we cut to people dancing while holding green spheres. Then we cut to Ruslana and group in white and silver. She's not singing live (sore throat).

Then the hosts who were both awkward and stilted and Masha has beeen put into a horrible lilac flouncy frock (which I should raise all of 2 Euros in your local Oxfam).

HUNGARY : Exact same as last night, but the vocal is a bit better. The audience are keen on this. It should be Top 10 despite a poor draw.

UNITED KINGDOM : Javine is is a lovely mustard coloured dress with gold braiding with gold etching. The singers in tomato . They lost the backing track in the middle of this and the vocals were poor (shouted). Javine is not getting the camera shots. A VERY uncomfortable performance. Not Top 10 at the moment.

MALTA : Chiara is in a maroon embroidered dress and a simple string of pearls. There's a lovely sphere behind the stage, giving a nice setting and Chiara is beautifully made up and looks comfortable and relaxed throughout the performance. I don't like the song, but this would be a serious contender if it wasn't for the draw.

ROMANIA : No dry ice today. I had to skip to the (very grim) porta-loos but I told that this was the same as last night.

NORWAY : Again the same as last night. The boys are stars, and the reaction is great, but I can't help thinking that this one trick pony was a bit on the lame side today. Maybe one too many glasses of milk last night?

TURKEY : Huge reaction to this before it even start. . There is a huge contrast to Norway and Romania and the performance is great. They are finally getting the excitement from the auditorium over on screen. This is very good and I wouldn't be srprised with a Top 10 finish.

MOLDOVA : The singer is now bare chested and only wears the apron skirt with a red and black zig zag body paint over his right shoulder and down his chest. These boys told us last night (in one of the few good moments in press conference) that they hated the singback and wanted to perform completly live. I can see why. This is full on in your face and unlike Norway has gone up a notch today. BE VERY AFRAID.

ALBANIA : Now split away from the other ethnic song from Turkey, this stands up better. Ledina is still in a white dress with a red edged cutaway, there's still that annoying dance routine with the toy violins and a manic drummer and while it's not a contender to win, it won't be bottom 5 either.

CYPRUS : Constantinos in a skin tight white t-shirt and Elina in in a white satin dress with throw over sleeves. The routine was the same as ever, which is too much for me. The performance was good. Somwhere between 10 and 20 in the results I think.

SPAIN : The girls in gold, red and blue dresses look fabulous (there's a lot of obvious cleavage going on). The lift of the three girls gets a good reaction. The rapping mugger is now in a very elaborate black suit. The whole package is well put together but I really can't see this launching a serious challenge.

ISRAEL : A bit of a shaky start and the fuzzy shots are a bit pointless for me. Shiri is closing her eyes too much but once she gets into her stride it's a cracking performance. With no Glennis, this is going to clean up on the ballad vote. This is a contender and I think Israel is going to gfet its best result since 1998.

SERBIA & MONTENEGRO : No national costumes, just shiny jeans and jackets. The performance is too busy for me, but the vocals are good. A bit of feeedback at times (mics too close together?). I don't see this in the Top 10, but after Macedonia last night who knows anymore?

The ad break today was the same as last night's voting break (preparations in Kyiv). Then they plug the Eurovision book with a bit of Q&A between Masha and Pasha. By the way, the same postcard is being for every song today.

DENMARK : Jakob was obviously delighted and shocked to qualify based on what I heard last night. There's a simple charm about this that cannot be denied. The draw hasn't helped, but seeing as this has already got some friends based on last night's result, don't be surprised if it's in the Top 10.

SWEDEN : Martin is finally in performance costume with a 5 o'clock shadow to compliment the look. He starts alone but unfortunatly the arrival of the dancing girls is signalled by one of them walking acroos the shot. The microphone stand trick is becoming tired for me, but a lot of people won't have seen it before. The stage comes alight for the key change. Vocally perfect and still a dark horse.

MACEDONIA : The "I am de boy" bit is now really getting on my nerves. The routine is exactly the same as last night. With so many other Balkan countries in the final, this will finally get the result it deserves; bottom 5.

UKRAINE : The same routine as earlier this week with two boy dancers in hooded tshirts bound in handcuffs. They are out of time at the start and the whole thing has an eager but very amateur feel to it. I like the song, but Sweden record for the worst result for a host could be under threat.

GERMANY : Tons opf energy at the begining with flailing guitars and mad drumming as Gracia bounces on stage. Blue and white lights compliment the performers dressed in black. The difference between the quite berses and the screamed chorus is harsh on the ears. Another one for the bottom 5.

CROATIA : Looking great after the three songs that went before it and bound to get Balkan votes. Boris is note perfect and sells the song. Once again. BE VERY AFRAID.

GREECE : On the good side, Helena looked better, far more relaxed and less aggressive, it was note perfect and the sexy brown dress makes her look great. On the bad side, they have kept the silly gimmick with the stick and the braces and now I see that when the dancers lay down on stage, they form the number one. This whole show is trying far too hard, and I can understand why, because the song is so poor, and while a bunch of mad gimmicks can make a winner (remember Marie N) I dont think it will happen again. It should squeeze into the Top 10 though.

RUSSIA : The manages to be repiticious and forgettable which is a hard trick to do. Natalya looks ok but shouts to much for my liking. Lots of neighbours, so Top 10, but no more.

BOSNIA : The girls in very stylish pink satin party dresses belt out the song but the vocal is too high in the mix while the routine is basic but effective. There is too much decant in this for my liking. A member of the Swedish delegation complains of how such an "old fahioned" song could win. This from a country that gave us "Take Us To Your Heaven" in 1998. "Don't fart in the lift and then complain about the smell" I say.

SWITZERLAND : The lead singer's hair is now tied back in a ponytail. More white shiny outfits and the performance is bang on the money. This is a serious contender, make no mistake.

LATVIA : More pretty teenagers in white. Walters (the bigger lad) has a sore throat and cannot sing. He's also wearing a scarf (a very bizarre look). I cannot yunderstand how his sleeping pill of a song qualified, so I'm not really the best person to ask how it will do, but if I was voting, this would be second last.

FRANCE : Ortal is wearing the most Godawful yellow frock with a belt effect around her hips, her shoes in match. The backing singers in black. I don't know how they have managed it, but this song now sounds to repitious and unexciting. The dancing is ok, but the vocal are shrill. Another one for the bottom 5.

The hosts are back with Pasha in a silk bow type and Macha in a great silver ballgown.

The Klycko Brothers ring the bells to start the voting.

The reprises are very well chosen, especially Norway, Turkey, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland, but Bosnia has chosen disasterously.

I'll now divide the songs into four sections based on today's performances;

Potential winners : Norway, Israel, Switzerland, Croatia

Should make the Top 10 : Malta, Turkey, Moldova, Sweden, Greece, Russia, Bosnia

Need to improve : Hungary, UK, Romania, Albania, Cyprus, Spain, Montenegro,

In the bottom 5-6 : Denmark, Macedonia, Ukraine, Germany, Latvia, France

I will be in the hall for tonight's rehearsal.

Hi Again

Thanks to Keith for sitting in the bouncy castle to watch the first final dress rehearsal.

WOW. While I write this the girls from Feminem(Bosnia) have just walked up to me and handed me a fab souvenir.
I said that they did well today. The told me to stop lying so i said their routine was good but not their vocals.
They admitted to being tired and their mikes werent quite working together. Even stars have to party all night at
Eurovision. They have handed me a 2 disc DVD/CD package.
CD contains 8 tracks Zovi,Call me,Llama,Ring Nu, Ruf Mich,Sevdim plus karaoke and intrumental.
DVD contains Call me video and photo gallery and postcards from past(music stars of bosnia sing hits of Eurosong).

I had my last live link to Forth2 of this week and a lunch appointment so missed most of the first countries.
Came in at Macedonia. Watched all the rest and the reprise. I will be going to this evenings rehearsal so will see
them all live in the hall. Then a well earned rest.

But based on what I saw and heard today I am changing some of the places in my final placings from this morning.

Javine has a sore throat today so did not sing well. Hope she sings better tomorrow. But based on what I saw I may drop
UK a couple of places. Latvia also have a sore throat in the camp and may suffer if not recovered.
Turkey was apparently superb. Macedonia was as good as ever(this is called Scottish humour).
Ukraine and Germany and Russia were still bad. Croatia was better again. Greece have nailed it and have a huge chance to win.
Bosnia as i said already was weak vocally. France was also very poor today and a horrible dress. Ortal is beautiful and should wear something nicer.

So to my new updated top24.

This was the one from earlier before rehearsals

1.Norway
2.Greece
3.Switzerland
4.Malta

May. 20th, 2005 @ 07:33 pm Hello again
Hi there

Have not a lot to report yet. Just in press centre. Heading into the dress rehearsal in about 30 minutes. Had a quiet Eurovision afternoon. It was my partner's birthday today so we went out for a big lunch. got back to hotel and watched the last 4 songs in this afternoons press conference on screen.

Bosnia was performed well, vocals were too high in the mix and was a bit shouted near the end.

Switzerland was very good, good vocals , well performed.

Latvia was below par for me and, it looked to me like one of the guys was not singing. Might have been clelbrating after qualifying last night?:)))

France was fine. Ortal in yellow outfit. Vocals not fabulous but better than some rehearsals she has had.

Will hopefully form better opinions afetr tonight's rehearsal which I'll post here afterwards.

May. 20th, 2005 @ 11:04 pm Who ordered the water?
There's been a cloud over Kyiv all day reflecting the mood of the 15 delegations who missed out last night. Now it's started to rain. Isn't there an EBU directive about no rain on Eurovision day?

The Eurovision village outside the venue is gettuing better by the night, so get here early (you also avoid the awful security queues.

Tonight the venue was about half full and mainly with locals, so it was a good chance  to judge what might go down well tomorrow.

A quick update;
Hungary was better vocally.
UK was DREADFUL vocally and this is now a contender for bottom 5.
Malta got a GREAT reaction in the hall.
Romania, Norway, Turkey were the same as before. Steady, but I don't see any of them winning.
Moldova was amazing in the hall, probably because the band are known here. However the vibe is moving towards this. This is well worth an each way bet.
Albania, Cyprus and Spain were ok, but not contenders based on the reaction in the hall.
Israel was a little flat tonight.
Montenegro is hard work but got no reaction.
Denmark and Sweden were better than before.
Macedonia is completly flat.
Ukraine went down a storm, but it's not a contender.
Germany was a train wreck, nothing is workeing, sound, camera angles, nothing.
Croatia is by far the best Balkan ballad and will be Top 10.
Greece is just too forced and there was no reaction apart from the Greeks.
Russia got a great reaction. This is what Germany should be. Top 10 for sure.
Bosnia was better than before, but its just out of its time and its not a contender.
Switzerland was a great performance.
Only Kazha sang for Latvia. The crowd loved this.
France was better than today but that frock is an eyesore.

If I was to call it this minute here is how I could see it finishing;
1 MOLDOVA
2 MALTA
3 SWITZERLAND
4 NORWAY
5 CROATIA
6 GREECE
7 RUSSIA
8 HUNGARY
9 ISRAEL
10 SWEDEN
11 TURKEY
12 CYPRUS
13 LATVIA
14 BOSNIA
15 SPAIN
16 MONTENEGRO
17 DENMARK
18 UKRAINE
19 UNITED KINGDOM
20 ROMANIA
21 ALBANIA
22 MACEDONIA
23 FRANCE
24 GERMANY

I cannot believe the Top 3. The only one I like is Switzerland. I hope that things will change tomorrow.
